On Court

The BNP Paribas Open started in 1974 in Tucson, Arizona, and found its permanent home in Indian Wells in 1981. Larry Ellison bought it in 2009 and spent the next decade turning the desert venue into what's referred to as 'Tennis Paradise' — the most attended tennis event outside the four Grand Slams.

Its nickname has a conflicted backstory. In 2001, the crowd booed Serena Williams through the final and aimed racial slurs at her father and sister in the stands. The Williams sisters boycotted Indian Wells for fourteen years. Serena made her return in 2015 in what was one of the most emotionally charged moments in modern tennis. She was greeted by a standing ovation from the Coachella Valley crowd and went on to win her match against Niculescu.
