On Court

The Charleston Open is the last tournament played on green clay before the tour transitions to red clay. Green clay (Har-Tru) is mined in Virginia and made of crushed greenstone. It plays faster and slightly grittier than the red clay used in Europe. Chris Evert won the Charleston Open eight times.

The tournament started in 1973 as the first women's tennis event broadcast on network television. The first champion, Rosie Casals, won $30,000 — the largest prize ever paid to a woman in tennis at the time. In 2026 it became the first women-only WTA 500 to match the men's ATP prize money.
