On Court

The original Monte Carlo tennis was played at the Casino. The first courts went up in 1897 on the rooftop of the Hôtel de Paris, right next to the Casino itself. The hotel, the casino, the opera, and the tennis were all run by the same company: the Société des Bains de Mer. By the twenties the same crowd moved between them — European royalty, American expats escaping Prohibition, the writers and artists who'd taken over the Riviera. Suzanne Lenglen won three of the early tournaments, 1919 to 1921.

She returned in 1925 after a few years away. A wealthy American watching her play decided the courts weren't worthy, and convinced Prince Louis II to fund a new club. The Monte-Carlo
Country Club opened in 1928, and the tennis left the Casino for good.
